A Corvette tachometer is one of the most important parts of the car. Sure, it’s not one of the most visible. No one will see your Corvette come down the road and think: “wow, look at that tachometer.” However, it’s one of those parts that’s just critical to making a good Corvette great and a great Corvette something genuinely special. Here at CS of MD West, we take tachometers quite seriously. In this blog, we’ll go over how we make each tachometer as well as showcase some different tachometer kinds you can purchase.
Custom Corvette Tachometer
A tachometer is too important to be left to a machine. Each tachometer we make is made by hand. They’re made by the hands of a skilled craftsperson that has been building tachometers for a long time. This is not a job for amateurs. These tachometers are made to the exact specifications of Corvettes of the past. However, each of these tachometers is made out of all new parts. The designs are classic, the materials are not. What that means is that you’ll get tachometers that are strong and sturdy enough to last for many years to come. Instead of purchasing some classic part that’s been sitting on a shelf or in a Corvette for years, you’ll have something new that’s ready to stand the test of time on its own.
Tachometer Kinds
As you may know, there were eighteen different tachometers made between 1953 and 1962 Corvettes. If you’re wondering: “which tachometers do you offer?” The answer is: all of them. Really. We have each version for sale. All of the differences, no matter how minute, are accounted for. While the materials are cutting edge, each of these tachometers fits perfectly into their corresponding vintage car. There’s no method that’s too elaborate or painstaking for us to give you the right tachometer design. For example, the 1959-1962 dials and faces are replicated using the best of digital imaging. That’s as close as it gets to stepping through a time machine.
The Right Calibration
A tachometer is as good as its calibration. It’s the only way to make sure that they’re accurate. Without the proper calibration, a tachometer is just something else on your dash. We charge the magnet (also known as the “first worm”) and discharge it as required. Then, we take the speed cup and adjust its spring tension. To make sure your calibration is done properly, we use a calibration machine. However, we don’t just use any machine. This machine has one use and one use only: making sure that tachometers are calibrated properly. As we mentioned; if there’s something we can do to make sure that your tachometer is given the care it deserves, we’ll do it.
Mechanical and Electronic
We believe that when someone makes Corvette reproduction parts, they should be as close to the real, original thing as possible. For some reason, others seem to disagree with us on this, particularly when it comes to tachometers and speedometers. We’ve come across many reproduction tachometers and speedometers which have their own versions of internals. What’s so weird about that is they can’t be serviced with the original equipment parts. That seems to defeat the purpose of getting replacement parts, at least partially. You’ll never have to worry about that happening with our reproduction speedometers and tachometers.
Each of our parts can be serviced with the original equipment parts. That way, our parts will never be something that you have to throwaway should they ever require any service. To further help you have a working tachometer in the future; we also make it so that you can get an electronic tachometer as well. We build these so that they retain the original appearance. No one will know you have an electronic tachometer unless you specifically tell them. However, just like our other kinds of tachometers, we make them entirely from scratch and by hand. What makes these tachometers different is that they have an electronic module. To give them an even greater kind of accuracy, we calibrate them using a digital square wave generator.
Beyond making the reproduction tachometers, we also have plenty of parts available for your tachometers as well. You can get the faces for your tachometers here as well as the magnets, speed cups, pointers, bezels, lenses, hardware, housings and even many more internal parts. We aim to be your one stop shop for all things tachometer and really, Corvette too. We ship for free to the lower 48 states, so that you can get all of the Corvette parts you want for a reduced price. The tachometer may not be the showiest or flashiest part of the Corvette, but it’s an important one. And, that tachometer is right in front of you as you drive.
